Left Field

Cindy Sheehan had the following to say today:

"I don't care if a human being is black, brown, white, yellow or pink. I don't care if a human being is Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, or pagan. I don't care what flag a person salutes: if a human being is hungry, then it is up to another human being to feed him/her. George Bush needs to stop talking, admit the mistakes of his all around failed administration, pull our troops out of occupied New Orleans and Iraq, and excuse his self from power. The only way America will become more secure is if we have a new administration that cares about Americans even if they don't fall into the top two percent of the wealthiest."

Occupied New Orleans? According to the Voice of America website the troops in the New Orleans are under the control of Lousiana Governor Kathleen Blanco:

In water-logged Louisiana, President Bush asked the governor to cede control of relief efforts to the feds. She declined. Thus, you'll find both armed, state-controlled guardsmen and women, and federal soldiers carrying unloaded weapons in storm-ravaged New Orleans

So not only are the "occupying troops" in New Orleans actually under the direct control of the governor of Louisana(who is a Democrat by the way) but in the case of the federal troops the weapons are not even loaded. Remember, Southerners do not take too kindly to federal troops occupying their cities and that is obviously not the case here.

At any rate, Cindy Sheehan has managed to push herself and her message even farther to the fringe and away from any kind of credibility with the mainstream.

Comments:
That story about Blanco sounds like the blame-the-locals cover that Rove was pushing for Bush (although I can't read the original story). Thing is, Blanco declared a state of emergency on Aug. 26 and requested federal help on Aug 28, so she had done what was necessary to get the feds in there before they finally decided to mosey on in. There's plenty of blame to for around for everybody so it's not necessary to push it all off onto Blanco. By the way, why does it take Blanco three attempts to get through to Bush by phone while Bush himself actually calls Mississippi's Republican governor?
